In November 2013, SAC Capital Advisors, LP, and its affiliates were charged with conspiracy to commit securities fraud and insider trading for operating a widespread scheme over nearly two decades. The firm pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a record $1.8 billion in fines and disgorgement, which was the largest penalty of its kind at the time. As a result of the settlement, the firm was barred from managing outside capital and ultimately ceased its hedge fund operations.
In November 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice charged SAC Capital Advisors, LP, and its affiliated entities, including S.A.C. Capital Advisors LLC, CR Intrinsic Investors, LLC, and Sigma Capital Management, LLC. The indictment alleged that the firm orchestrated a massive insider trading scheme over nearly two decades, cultivating a culture that encouraged portfolio managers and analysts to trade on material non-public information. This misconduct generated over $600 million in illicit profits for the firm and its traders. SAC Capital Advisors pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and agreed to pay a record $1.8 billion in fines and forfeitures. This settlement represented the largest insider trading penalty in U.S. history at the time. As part of the resolution, the firm was barred from managing outside capital, effectively ending its ability to operate as a hedge fund. The firm subsequently shut down its hedge fund operations and later reorganized as Point72 Asset Management under strict regulatory oversight.
