paragraph

George Curtis was named Regional Director of the SEC’s Central Regional Office on October 19, 2006, overseeing enforcement and examination in six western states. He brought extensive private-sector experience as a partner at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, where he specialized in defending clients against SEC enforcement actions and complex regulatory litigation. No fraud, charges, or financial penalties are associated with Curtis; the announcement solely highlights his qualifications and the SEC’s endorsement of his leadership.

narrative

On October 19, 2006, the SEC announced the appointment of George Curtis as Regional Director of its Central Regional Office, effective mid-November 2006. Curtis succeeded Randall Fons, who left the Commission to enter private practice, and was tasked with overseeing enforcement and examination activities in Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico. A longtime partner at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher since 1976, Curtis had built a distinguished career defending clients in SEC enforcement actions and complex regulatory litigation involving the DOJ, PCAOB, and self-regulatory organizations. SEC leadership, including Chairman Christopher Cox and Director of Enforcement Linda Thomsen, praised his deep knowledge of securities law, management experience, and familiarity with the Commission’s operations. Curtis had no prior association with SEC misconduct; his role was as a defense attorney, not a regulator, and the announcement made no mention of any wrongdoing, charges, or financial penalties. He earned his B.A. from Fordham University and his J.D. from the University of Chicago, and had previously led the firm’s Denver office on two occasions. The press release framed his appointment as a strategic enhancement to the SEC’s regional enforcement capabilities, not as the resolution of any fraud case.
